St. Paul Miki was the son of a Japanese military leader. He was born in Japan and was educated at the Jesuit college and he was very eloquent in preaching. Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was the ruler of Japan persecuted the Christians in Japan and as part of his persecution he crucified Paul Miki with 25 other Catholics in the name of the emperor. Some of the martyrs were made to watch the crjuxifictions before they had to undergo the same fate. They were all canonized as the Martyrs of Japan in 1862.
