St. Emma (d.1038) also known as Emma of Lesum, or Emma of Stiepel, lived in the city that is Bremen today. She was the first female inhabitant of the city to be known by name. She was born in a family of nobility. Emma's father was a count and her brother a bishop. She married a noble man and had a son who later became a bishop. Her husband went to Russia and became ill and died. After the death of her husband Emma started to work for the church and established many small parishes and donated to churches. After her death, when her tomb was opened her entire body was turned into dust except for her right hand which she used to give gifts.

St. Emma please pray for us to have a generous heart.
