St. Jerome Emiliani (1481 - 1537) used to be an atheist. He was captured and put in a fortress in Venice, Italy. While he was in captivity he started to think about God and he wanted to get rid of his worldly attachments. When he finally escaped the fortress he hung up his chains in a nearby church as a thanksgiving to God for freeing him from his chains of captivity and also for freeing him from his spiritual prison. He spent the rest of his life helping other people. He rented a home for orphans and he fed them, clothed them and educated them and he also gave them spiritual education from the Catechism. He also founded orphanages and hospitals in other cities.
St. Jerome please pray for us to be free from the spiritual chains which keeps us away from God.
