St. Marianne Cope (1838 - 1918) was also known as St. Marianne of Moloka'i. When Marianne was a little girl her father became sick and she had to work in a factory at the young age of eight. After her father passed away she went to be a nun in New York. She was a teacher in New York and later directed the opening of two Catholic hospitals in New York. At this time there was a plea for help from leprosy sufferers of Hawaii. Marianne moved to Hawaii along with six other sisters and started to care for the lepers. She established an hospital in Moloka'i and helped take care of lepers and other religious who started getting leprosy from helping the lepers. She served the community even in her old age, but miraculously never contracted leprosy.
