St. John the Silent (452 - 558) was born in Nicopolis, Armenia. When he was just eighteen years old he started a monastery. When he was twenty eight years old he was appointed as the bishop of Colonia in Palestine. He spent nine years as a bishop and then retired so that he could follow an eremitical life. Through a vision he found his way to a monastery where he spent seventy five years walled up as a silent recluse.

St. John the Silent pray for us to not sin with our words and learn to be silent when we have nothing good to say.
