St. Dominic Savio (1842-1857) was born in the village of Riva in northern Italy. He had nine brothers and sisters. His family was poor, but they were devout Catholics. When he was two years old, Dominic's family returned to their native village of Castlenuovo d'Asti, (Today, Castlenuovo Don Bosco) near the birthplace of John Bosco. Bosco would himself later be canonized as a Saint by the Church and became a major influence on the life of Dominic. Dominic loved the Lord and the church. He used to always say grace before every meal and refused to eat meal with people who did not join him prayer. He frequently visited the church to pray and even prayed outside the church. He knelt outside the church even if there was snow or mud. Dominic was an exceptional student who studied hard and performed well in school. He became an altar server. When he saw seven, he asked the priest if he could receive the Holy Communion [In that time period children of age 12 only received the Holy Communion]. Seeing Dominic's extreme piety and knowledge of the church, an exception was made for him to receive the Holy Communion at the age of seven.
